A recent study published in the CMAJ (Nov 2011) revealed that patients taking SSRI anti-depressants (such as Paxil, Prozak, Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro and Effexor) have an increased risk of bleeding if they are also taking blood thinning drugs such as aspirin or clopidogrel (Plavix). Bleeding risk was increased by 50%.
COMMENT: In patients who are severely depressed, taking an SSRI with anti-platelet blood thinners may have more benefits than risks, but for those mildly or moderately depressed, other agents should be considered instead.
